History of world of Fitness
World of Fitness is the realisation of the dream of Anne and Martin Bateson to run a fitness centre, providing services for the local community where Martin spent his childhood. Both Anne and Martin have been involved in sports since their early years - for Anne, the journey started with ballet before becoming one of the first women in the UK to achieve national coaching qualifications in boxing whilst for Martin, boxing was his first love and he went on to win many titles whilst representing his local area and County. Anne has always participated in a variety of sports at competition level, becoming Schools and County Fencing Champion and regularly competing in HorseRiding events. Anne has valuable international business experience predominantly within sales, marketing and customer service management.
The World of Fitness attitude to fitness is a holistic one – key to this is feeling good about yourself and being comfortable in your own body. But the environment you are in is also of major importance – it has to feel right and the people you mix with need to be genuine, supportive and friendly.
Over the last decade of running a successful fitness centre in the Burley area of Leeds, the World of Fitness team has experienced, first hand, the benefits of people of participating in exercise programmes. But, despite record levels of government spending and advertising on promoting healthy lifestyles, there is still a significant percentage of the population leading sedentary lives.
For too long, those people within our communities who most need support to engage in active lives are the ones least likely to receive assistance, mainly due to social or economic challenges. World of Fitness exists to provide first class and affordable health and fitness services that are sensitive to the needs of the diverse communities in which they operate.
The time is right for World of Fitness to flourish within an environment where tackling child obesity and the general health and wellbeing are issues that are so high on the political agenda. Sport England has invested in the provision of ‘state of the art’ equipment at the Burley centre and already World of Fitness is delivering services to schools across the city of Leeds by becoming involved with initiatives such as the School Sports Partnerships working with community groups, health agencies and youth projects. Since our re-launch in September 2007, we have already exceeded our targets for participation across all sectors of the community.
People from different cultures and backgrounds within the community now have a place they can visit to access affordable fitness activities in that so important genuine, supportive and friendly setting but of course, we can and indeed want to do more.
