Case Studies

Case Study 1
A local school asked at short notice, to take a young lad with attendance issues on for a few hours vocational placement each day, during a period of exclusion. He demonstrated a lack of respect for teacher’s, no motivation and erratic behaviour that was increasingly worrying. We worked with him and produced a training diary that taught him to provide administrative support including using the computerised booking systems, updating and coordinating diaries and dealing with the public, putting him on cleaning duties, helping staff to devise individual training and coaching programmes, assisting in classes including boxing, shadowing coaches and assisting in community initiatives including working on projects with his peers.  The improvements were immediate. He turned up on time attitude improved. He is now back in school part-time, he has calmed down considerably and is being given the opportunity to place a new emphasis on his education. He is intelligent and has been given the impetus to break the circle that was likely to take him down a very different path. He has reacted positively to an environment that has encouraged him to grow in maturity and strength of character. He has been taught an important lesson in respect and his peers, who were once encouraging him to ‘bunk off’ school, have reacted well to his participation and community activities. His improvement has given others the confidence and motivation to strive for a better life.

Case Study 2
A middle-aged man who has been on medication for many years for depression was advised by his doctor to join a gym. In just one month of becoming a member, he has been able to significantly reduce his reliance on medication and says that joining World of Fitness it is the best thing he has done in his life.

Case Study 3
A young girl, who was struggling at school both academically and with behaviour issues, was placed on a 6-month work placement programme with World of Fitness. She proved herself to be capable and was offered employment. She enrolled at college and worked for us in a paid position whilst she completed her course. Once she graduated she found a higher paid job. World of Fitness gave her the confidence and skills to enable her to find a new vocation.

Case Study 4
World of Fitness provided teen obesity classes to a group of 10 local teenagers with weight issues. The teens responded positively, participating in regular boxing and circuit classes for 10 weeks. Two of teens have continued with us after the sessions finished and one, 5-months on, is now a normal weight and enjoys a much-improved lifestyle. Not only has she grown in confidence, as she is no longer bullied, but also her fitness levels have been transformed. Her new positive outlook has delighted her family and she now wants to get involved in organising local football leagues.

Case Study 5
Asian women, working in partnership with a local health network, have taken advantage of our ladies only gym facilities. They feel totally comfortable with their twice-weekly sessions that are staffed exclusively by women. They have optional use of the studio for classes, use of the ladies only fitness and toning suite and the mixed gym during timetabled ladies only sessions.

Case Study 6
We were funded by Leeds City Council to offer free physical activity sessions to the local community and after much debate we decided to offer cheerleading to local teens, which is just one of our many after school activities. The sessions commenced mid 2007 and 90 girls registered on the first day. It proved so popular that when the 10-week session finished they independently found funding and 50 girls regularly attend. Some of the girls are now looking to compete and perform and are now training with the Ladybirds Cheerleading squad.

Case Study 7
We provide young offenders with a variety of physical activity programmes. The sessions enable youths to spend valuable time with adult role models, improve their physical fitness and understanding their responsibilities towards self-discipline and respect for others as their behaviour is monitored at each session. Sessions include gym and classes such as boxing circuit and kickboxing. Group leaders have reported a reduction in re-offending levels, improvements to overall health and fitness, increased confidence and motivation and improved discipline and respect.

Case Study 8
A young lad from the local area recently won a silver medal for England at the European Boxing Championships. He has been boxing for 4 years, and is coached by Martin Bateson. He has been nominated as the British Asian Sports Personality of the Year (under 18’s) by the BASA (British Asian Sports Awards), which is sponsored by Sony and has been invited to a national press call at the Oval Cricket Ground in London with Mark Ramprakash. This lad not only manages to fit his studies in around his boxing commitments but is currently being touted as one of England’s most likely Olympic hopefuls for the London 2012 Olympics.
